ABEOKUTA NORTH COUNCIL BOSS, PRINCE AYORINDE HARPS ON CHOLERA PREVENTION, AWARENESS

The Executive Chairman, Abeokuta North Local Government, Prince Adebayo Abdulsalam Ayorinde, has emphasised the need to prevent and eradicate the spread of cholera outbreak within the Council Area. 

      

The Council boss, ably represented by the Vice Chairman, Hon.Ayoola Oluajo stated this during the sensitization of cholera outbreak  and prevention, organized by Abeokuta North Local Government Rapid response Team with the support of Ogun State Ministry of Health, In the Council Secretariat, Akomoje Abeokuta. 

Hon.Oluajo who charged the Department of Water and Environmental sanitation to go out enmass and appoint surveillance who will look after those areas that are not in compliance with the preventive measures laid down by the Ministry of Health. He also enjoined the sanitarians to form a formidable tax force team in alliance with the Primary Health Care Department to eradicate the spread of cholera in Abeokuta North Local Government.

He added that nobody is above the law of the government and ordered, that any house without toilet and untidy environment or organisation  will be penalized and zealed accordingly. Hon.Oluajo also urged the tax force team to go about their duties without exercising any fear going by the Government directives. 

Responding, the Director, Primary Health Care, Dr.Oladipupo Afonja described cholera as a water-borne disease, spread by contaminated food or water.  He stated that cholera causes acute watery diarrhoea (water stool), vomiting and if left untreated it can lead to DEATH within hours.

Dr. Afonja further said, that two confirmed cases of cholera has been recorded within the Council Area on Friday 28th June 2024 while the duo had thoughrouly been given medical attention, with response to medications

and they have been discharged with no traces of cholera. A 62 year old woman from Ago-Ika and 5 years old boy from Elega axis of Abeokuta, as well as one suspected case of age 38  was also discovered with trace of cholera symptom. 

He reiterated that the efforts of Ogun State Ministry of Health on cholera awareness and advertisement on Radio  and Television has been  placed to caution the spread of cholera in the state generally. 

      

Dr Afonja said some of the symptoms of cholera includes, Dizziness, vomiting, Fever, dehydration, weakness and thirsty..

Moreover, he advised people to "wash their hands often with soap and clean water, drink and use potable water to cook food , ensure to keep it covered, eat it hot, peel fruits before shewing it and to consider vaccinated in the kitchen and their home environments in order to prevent cholera", explained by Dr. Afonja.
